Our stay was lovely - our host was very friendly and stayed later for our check-in due to a train delay. He was very helpful with explaining the room facilities. The room was comfy, and the inn was only a short walk from Matsumoto Castle and convenience stores which was great.

In the city, the Japan Ukiyo-e Museum and the Matsumoto City Museum of Art are excellent. Renting a car from Toyota Car Rental for a drive to the Venus Line and the Utsukushigara Open Air Museum (sculpture park) was great.

Matsumoto castle was lovely to see at night.
Matsumoto castle was lovely to see at night. The Yayoi Kusama exhibition at the Matsumoto City Museum of Art is permanent and the outside is gorgeous but the exhibit itself was disappointingly small compared to the one in Tokyo. My favourite is the temporary exhibit of the artworks of Yasuka Sudou, an artist who died young of cancer at the age of 30. Her works interplay light and darkness and are technically impressive and emotionally touching.

We stayed at Hotel Kagetsu which is just a few minutes walk from the castle. The castle is def worth a visit. If you go to the top there are very steep stairs. We ate at two local restaurants. I can recommend the tiny tonkatsu restaurant which is just 50m down the road from the hotel. A taxi from the station takes 10 mins and costs 1000 yen.

The castle is beautiful, the local shopping streets are lovely and had variety. The Matsumoto City Museum of Art is fantastic for Yayoi Kusama lovers.
A nice quiet city after the throng of Tokyo, slower paced.

Good place to stay for access to the mountains.
Good place to stay for access to the mountains. The town is small but has good facilities including some big shops. There are a few restaurants but many close early and some are not easily accessible for people who don’t speak Japanese

A city to stay in for day trips!
A city to stay in for day trips! Matsumoto is welcoming and kind. Not too much to do in the city itself (I think one day is enough). we were in Matsumoto for 3 nights, on the first day came from Alpine route, on the second day we went to Kamikochi, on the third day to Kiso Valley. the 4th day was super rainy - was good for a museum + shopping mall + movie + massage. Enjoy!
The room was one of the most comfortable ones we stayed at this trip (3 weeks) and the hosts are so friendly! It's a family run ryokan and one can really feel at home here.
We got many tips for exploring Matsumoto and the tickets for the castle with them and rented bikes from the hotel to explore around town.
Their brekkie is delicious and Atsuko was super friendly and took us to the station when we checked out.
Thank you so much for the lovely stay!
The staff were incredibly helpful and friendly, possibly the best I have had in Japan. The buffet breakfast was delicious, many different options with a beautiful view of the mountains, they even included the top 3 recommended dishes people should try in Matsumoto. Parking was only a 5 minute walk and always had spaces available, family mart also on the bottom floor of the hotel and train station right across the road so a great location.
Very comfortable and cozy visit. The staff are both incredibly friendly and also very helpful. They let us borrow bikes free of charge so we could bike into town and gave us a discount on tickets to view Matsumoto Jo Castle. The bath was clean and very refreshing! If you're looking for the ryokan experience, you can't choose anywhere else besides Ryokan Seifuso!
super awesome location, for the price you cannot beat this place. the breakfast was great and included eggs, sausages, a few side dishes, some buns from a local bakery with butter and jam, soup, rice, coffee, tea, juices etc - super great value all together. only about 12 minutes walk from Matsumoto station and so close to the castle and shopping street.
It’s right at the Matsumoto J R station and just 15-20’s minute walk to get to the Matsumoto castle. The room is quite good, with necessary equipments. Staffs are friendly and helpful. Tasty breakfast with big volume. They serve optional Japanese set meal or western style breakfast. Beef curry is good and you can eat as much as you like😄
Matsumoto is not a large town so the hotel was within walking distance of most places. The castle is literally around the corner and is a fascinating place to visit. Breakfast was good. The stay was very good value for money. The twin room was very spacious (it may have been an upgrade). Fresh towels were provided every day.
First time staying at Toyoko Inn and it was great. Clear mission statement shown in hotel TV translated on point into the room. Comfortable, immaculate room at good reasonable value. Good breakfast provided. Stayed the one night, but would have happily stayed longer. Near the Matsumoto station, so easy to travel onwards.
Perfect location and value for money. It's a walk away from Matsumoto Station and if you need anything from Daiso or Maruzen, they are just conveniently on the floor below. The hotel owner was very kind as well. You can leave your luggage until 11pm on your check out day and they can even call a taxi if needed.
The hotel was exceptionally clean and provided a traditional Japanese stay in Matsumoto. A good location, helpful staff, excellent Onsen and free all-day coffee, juices and free noodles at night! Pillows were single and hard but soft "European" ones are provided on request. I would recommend a stay here.
Loved the cleanliness, the room amenities (clothing steamer/dryer was cool), the proximity to subway...and the breakfast was the BEST of all the hotels we had stayed at while in Japan (a total of 7). Next time we go to Nagano, this is the hotel we will come back to!!
The location of the hotel is convenient, close to the station (then again, most hotels are in that area). The property is somewhat old but well maintained with very nice staff. It has a sento (Japanese communal bath) on the top floor, which is a nice plus to relax.
The hotel was so close to Matsumoto station and some great eating spots. Worth the stay for the convenience to the station alone. The staff were friendly and were able to store our luggage until check in time. The price was excellent. I would stay here again.
The owner of the house is very helpful and he will also give you information about Nagano travel. The hotel is very comfortable and suitable for experiencing Japanese-style houses. The price is also very cheap, making it the most cost-effective hotel here.
We stayed in a traditional Japanese room, which we all loved and was great for kids. Lovely onsen and breakfast in this beautiful hotel. Great staff and a fabulous location in the older part of town. We loved Matsumoto, was a gorgeous town!
Location is one of the best charm point of the facility. Both castle and station are reachable within 10 minutes walk. And still in the quiet river side. Kura, Japanese old style warehouse, is now rare and sound me nostalgic.
We came to Matsumoto to explore the castle. This hotel was located both close to the train station and to the castle. As a bonus, there were plenty of restaurants close by.
One of the best hotels I’ve stayed in all of Japan. Highly recommended! Great location, too; just 1 block from the castle and the medieval shopping streets.
